For three decades, the UAE and its leadership have been committed to combating neglected tropical diseases. In 1990, the founding leader, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, donated $5.77 million to the Carter Center, with the aim of supporting its efforts. The goal is to eradicate Guinea worm disease, a neglected tropical disease.
The partnership between the Emirates and the Carter Center is due to the historic meeting that brought together the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace, and Jimmy Carter, on his first visit to the UAE. During the meeting, Carter spoke about his initiative to eradicate a debilitating parasitic disease that affects the population in Large parts of Africa
The late Sheikh Zayed responded by making a generous donation to the Carter Center, and the meeting resulted in a partnership to serve humanity, which has been going on for three decades, and has contributed to achieving achievements that have come close to eradicating the disease.
